A man from Germany has passed away, and two others, one of whom is British, have been wounded in an assault involving a knife and hammer on a main road in the heart of Paris.

The incident happened close to the Eiffel Tower just before 9:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. GMT) on Saturday.

A French man, aged 26, was subsequently apprehended, leading to the initiation of an inquiry by anti-terrorism officials.

Jean-François Ricard, the prosecutor, stated on Sunday that the suspect had sworn loyalty to the Islamic State.

During a press conference, the attorney shared that the individual in question had voiced his approval for the jihadist organization via a video shared on social media.

French news outlets have identified the person of interest as Armand R, a French citizen born in France to parents of Iranian descent.

Authorities stated that he was discharged from jail in 2020 after completing a four-year sentence for orchestrating an assault, and he was expected to be undergoing therapy for mental health issues.

Previously, it came to light that the individual who lost their life in the assault on Saturday evening was a German visitor who was employed as a nurse.

Gérald Darmanin, the Interior Minister of France, stated that the individual who was fatally knifed on Quai de Grenelle was in the company of his spouse at the time of the assault.

He mentioned that a cab driver's involvement rescued the wife's life, and the accused escaped over a bridge close to the River Seine.

Once he reached the northern bank of the river, he assaulted two additional individuals, striking the 66-year-old British casualty in the eye using a hammer.

The individual in question was subsequently subdued with a Taser by law enforcement officials and detained on allegations of premeditated murder, which is defined as assassination under French legislation. They were also accused of plotting an assassination in connection with a terrorist operation.

A video uploaded on the internet seemingly captured the instance when the suspect was detained by armed law enforcement officials, not too distant from the attack site.

Two individuals were harmed – a Frenchman in his 60s and a tourist from Britain – and both received medical attention from emergency personnel. Fortunately, neither of them were deemed to be in a critical state.

Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau informed French press on Sunday that the duo is "healthy".

On Saturday evening, law enforcement started an operation near the Bir-Hakeim subway station, with officials advising the public to steer clear of the vicinity.

Mr. Darmanin reported that the presumed assailant was overheard exclaiming "Allahu Akbar", which translates to "God is the greatest" in Arabic. He also informed the police that he was distressed because "a large number of Muslims are losing their lives in Afghanistan and Palestine".

It is also believed that the accused implied that France was involved in the killings of Palestinians in Gaza.

A video surfaced on social media on Saturday, where the alleged perpetrator was seen condemning the French administration and talking about what he referred to as the slaughter of innocent Muslims, as per the AFP news agency.

French President Emmanuel Macron, utilizing the platform previously known as Twitter, expressed his sympathy towards all victims of the "terrorist assault" and showed gratitude to the emergency services for their prompt action.

"The national office handling anti-terrorism is now tasked with uncovering the truth about this matter to ensure fairness is served on behalf of the French populace," he stated.

This happened barely two months following a tragic incident where a teacher was murdered in a stabbing incident at a high school in the northern city of Arras. This event led the French government to elevate the nation's security alert to its maximum level.
