A man from Germany has lost his life, and two others, one of whom is British, have sustained injuries in a violent assault involving a knife and hammer in downtown Paris.
The incident happened close to the Eiffel Tower just before 9:00 pm local time (8:00 pm GMT) on Saturday.
A French male, aged 26, was subsequently apprehended, and an inquiry into terrorism was initiated by prosecutors.
Prosecutor Jean-François Ricard announced on Sunday that the suspect had sworn loyalty to the Islamic State.
During a press conference, the attorney stated that the accused had shown his allegiance to the jihadist organization through a video shared on social media.
French media has identified the suspect as Armand R, a French citizen who was born in France to parents of Iranian descent.
Authorities confirmed his release from jail in 2020, following a four-year sentence for orchestrating an assault. He was expected to be undergoing therapy for mental health issues.
It was previously disclosed that the individual who lost their life in the assault on Saturday night was a German tourist employed as a nurse.
Gérald Darmanin, the Interior Minister of France, stated that the individual was accompanied by his spouse when he was assaulted and mortally wounded with a knife on Quai de Grenelle.
He revealed that a cab driver's interference saved the woman's life, while the suspect escaped over a bridge close by that crossed the River Seine.
Upon reaching the northern bank of the river, he assaulted two additional individuals, striking a 66-year-old British person in the eye with a hammer.
The individual in question was subsequently subdued with a Taser by law enforcement and detained under the suspicion of premeditated murder, as defined by French legislation, and "attempted murder in connection with a terrorist activity".
An online video seemed to capture the instant the alleged perpetrator was detained by weapon-bearing law enforcement, close to the location of the incident.
The two individuals who were harmed – a French man in his sixties and a British visitor – received medical attention from emergency personnel, with both in non-critical condition.
The Health Minister of France, Aurélien Rousseau, informed the French press on Sunday that the two individuals are "healthy".
A police activity began near the Bir-Hakeim subway station on Saturday evening, and officials warned the public to stay clear of the vicinity.
Mr. Darmanin conveyed that the purported assailant was reportedly yelling "Allahu Akbar", which translates to "God is the greatest" in Arabic. He informed the police that he was distressed due to the high number of Muslims losing their lives in Afghanistan and Palestine.
It is also believed that the suspect implied France was involved in the killing of Palestinians in Gaza.
A clip was shared on social media this Saturday, where the alleged perpetrator denounced the French government and talked about what he termed the killing of guiltless Muslims, according to reports from AFP news agency.
Posting on X, previously known as Twitter, French leader Emmanuel Macron expressed his sympathies to everyone impacted by the "act of terrorism" and appreciated the quick action of the emergency teams.
"The national prosecutor's office dealing with anti-terrorism will now undertake the task of unraveling the details of this case to ensure that justice is served on behalf of the citizens of France," he stated.
The incident occurred barely two months following the fatal stabbing of a teacher at a northern Arras high school. This event led the French authorities to elevate the nation's security alert to its maximum level.
