Carlos Alcaraz wins Wimbledon for second consecutive year over Novak Djokovic

Date:

Carlos Alcaraz breezed past Novak Djokovic on Sunday to win his second straight Wimbledon title over the men’s all-time leader in Grand Slam victories.

Alcaraz won in three straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 7-6, for his fourth Grand Slam title overall.

Alcaraz, 21, made it to the title rematch with a 6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 semifinal victory over Daniil Medvedev on Friday, whereas Djokovic took a slightly easier path to the championship contest, dispatching Lorenzo Musetti, 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

The finale was witnessed by Kate, the Princess of Wales, in a rare public appearance since she announced her cancer diagnosis earlier this year. She was joined by her daughter Charlotte, 9, and her sister, Pippa Middletown Matthews.

Kate came down to center court to hand a beaming Alcaraz his trophy.

Djokovic, who has 24 Grand Slam singles championships, is at the advanced tennis age of 37, and title opportunities are likely to be harder to come by in the coming years.

It was only a little more than a month ago that Djokovic had surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee after getting injured during the French Open.

Alcaraz won his first Slam title at the 2022 U.S. Open as a teenager, and no man ever has collected more Slam hardware before turning 22 than he has.

There’s a chance Alcaraz and Djokovic could meet again in a few short weeks on another massive stage and give French tennis fans the dream matchup they missed at Roland Garros.

They’re confirmed as participants in the upcoming Olympics. Djokovic won bronze in Beijing in 2008, while this would be Alcaraz’s first time playing under the Five Rings.
