Donald Trump’s pledge to force insurance companies to cover fertility treatments, or make the government pay for it, was met with concern from antiabortion groups that oppose the treatments and skepticism from advocates who have been working for such care for years.

Trump and fellow Republicans have been grappling with polls showing that abortion restrictions are unpopular in the wake of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. That decision has also prompted some states to push forward with restrictions on fertility care. Trump on Thursday said he would expand access to in vitro fertilization for would-be parents and cut the cost, which can be tens of thousands of dollars.
