The Perfect Couple Could Return for a Season 2 on Netflix

Date:

The following story contains spoilers for Netflix’s The Perfect Couple.

IF THERE’S ONE thing Netflix knows how to find, it’s addicting shows that will draw people in. Most of the time the streaming giant’s biggest shows are led by a big name or two along with several up-and-comers, and sometimes they’re filled with mostly unknown cast members looking to make names for themselves. But The Perfect Couple, the network’s latest smash hit murder mystery, comes with a couple built-in draws: it’s based on a bestselling novel by writer Elin Hilderbrand, and it comes with an absolutely stacked cast of stars, including Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Meghann Fahy, Dakota Fanning, Jack Reynor, and more.

The show tells the twisty, turny story of a wedding weekend in Nantucket that turns into a chaotic mess when one of the guests—a member of the wedding party—turns up dead on the wedding morning. The show is a lean, mean six episodes that manage to include mystery, steamy love scenes, and some of the most entertaining characters you’ll see in any show all year. But Netflix billed it as a Limited Series, and by the end of the sixth episode, it seems like just about everything is pretty neatly wrapped up. Does that mean that The Perfect Couple is done for good?

Kidman doesn’t seem to think so .

“I think there’s still an enormous amount of history and an enormous amount of future,” she said about the show’s future in an interview with USA Today, adding “I think it’s ripe” when asked about the potential of continuing.

Schreiber is also on board , saying in the same interview about the titular couple: “They’re taking a break for now, but who knows?”

Netflix hasn’t commented on any kind of a return, but there’s still plenty we can look at when speculating about the future of The Perfect Couple.

Will The Perfect Couple get a season 2?

The Perfect Couple was produced as a limited series for Netflix, so as of right now, there are no plans for a season 2. And given that the show’s six episodes wrap up all threads about the murder at the center of the show—and covers the entirety of Hilderbrand’s book—that makes sense.

But we also can’t rule out more. Nicole Kidman has been a part of two other shows—Big Little Lies and, now, Nine Perfect Strangers—that were initially planned as limited series, covered the entirety of their source material books, and then returned for more. (Big Little Lies season 2 debuted on HBO in 2019 and its stars have teased a potential third season, while Nine Perfect Strangers season 2 has been filmed and is coming soon to Hulu.)

There’s no sequel novel to The Perfect Couple, but Hilderbrand has written plenty of other similar books. It’s possible that the show’s writers could just write their own continuation of the story, and it’s also possible that one of the writer’s other books could be adapted to fit the characters at the center of The Perfect Couple; the latter direction is how last year’s Justified: City Primeval pulled source material from the late author Elmore Leonard’s catalogue.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see. But if there’s any way we can see that intro dance again, we’re probably going to be on board.
