Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Activist Agnes Chow Risks Bail to Pursue Studies in Canada Amid Ongoing Investigation

Hong Kong: Agnes Chow, Protest Leader, Skips Bail

Agnes Chow, a champion of democracy in Hong Kong, has revealed her plans to skip police bail following approval to proceed to Canada for advanced education.

In 2020, Ms. Chow was imprisoned due to her involvement in the 2019 protests against the government, but she was set free in 2021.

She remains under scrutiny for allegedly conspiring with international entities to jeopardize national safety.

"Perhaps I'll never go back to Hong Kong in my lifetime," she expressed.

Ms. Chow shared a social media post on Sunday, on her 27th birthday, disclosing her acceptance into a Toronto university earlier this year.

However, to retrieve her passport, she was compelled to travel to mainland China in August, accompanied by five police officers – a journey she was not allowed to decline.

"She penned down that she sensed being watched continuously."

She mentioned that she had been given a tour of an exhibit showcasing China's accomplishments since its reformation and liberalization in the late 1970s. She also visited the main office of the tech company Tencent, where they requested her to take pictures.

"If I remain quiet, those images could potentially serve as proof of my "nationalism" – such anxiety is incredibly real," she penned.

Ms. Chow mentioned that upon her return to Hong Kong, she was instructed to pen letters expressing regret for her previous political activities. Additionally, she was asked to express gratitude to the police for arranging the journey, which enabled her to witness the "remarkable progress of the motherland."

Ms. Chow is anticipated to make another appearance at the police station later this month, as her involvement in the matter related to pro-democracy media magnate Jimmy Lai's case is still being examined. The case involves accusations of conspiring with overseas entities to threaten China's national security.

She hasn't been accused yet.

She stated that her choice was based on factors such as "the circumstances in Hong Kong, her personal security, and her physical and psychological well-being".

The Hong Kong authorities have yet to respond to the allegations made by Ms Chow.

Ms. Chow emerged as a prominent figure in the city's movement for democracy and even earned the nickname "the true Mulan," likened to the legendary Chinese warrior who battled to protect her family and nation.

She made it to the list of BBC 100 Women in 2020, an annual roster that recognizes 100 globally influential and inspiring women and shares their narratives.

Since anti-government protests erupted in 2019, Hong Kong's officials have intensified their actions against pro-democracy advocates in the city. This reached a peak with the introduction of the national security law in 2020.
