Israel-Gaza conflict: Israeli troops advancing into southern Gaza
Israeli land troops are advancing into the southern part of Gaza, following three days of intense shelling.
Preliminary updates from the Israeli military radio have essentially verified that Israel has initiated a ground offensive north of Khan Younis.
The BBC has also confirmed photos of an Israeli tank functioning close to the city.
The chief of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) subsequently informed soldiers that the IDF was also battling "vigorously and comprehensively" in southern Gaza.
Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi addressed reservists from the Gaza division, discussing military goals and the IDF's elimination of Hamas leaders.
He informed the troops: "We battled fiercely and comprehensively in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, and we are currently doing the same in the southern part of the Gaza Strip".
An IDF representative subsequently verified that Israel is "persistently broadening the ground invasion" throughout the entire region of Gaza, which involves soldiers "directly engaging in combat with terrorists".
Following the conclusion of a ceasefire that lasted a week, Israel has recommenced extensive bombing operations in Gaza. Inhabitants of Khan Younis have characterized this onslaught as the most intense series of strikes to date.
The one-week ceasefire resulted in Hamas freeing 110 captives in Gaza in exchange for the liberation of 240 Palestinians from Israeli jails.
On Sunday morning, the military forces of Israel commanded an immediate evacuation from several areas of Khan Younis.
Officials from Israel suspect that leaders from Hamas are concealed within the city, where a vast number of individuals sought refuge after escaping the initial conflicts in the northern region during the onset of the war.
A United Nations representative has expressed a level of alarm he has never witnessed before in a Gaza medical facility, following a change in direction of the Israeli military's attack towards the south.
James Elder, who works with the children's organization Unicef, referred to Nasser Medical Hospital in Khan Younis as a scene akin to a "battlefield."
A consultant to the Prime Minister of Israel stated that the country is taking all necessary measures to prevent civilian casualties.
Mr. Elder informed the BBC that he was near Nasser hospital, where he could constantly hear loud explosions. He also mentioned that kids were being brought in with brain trauma, horrific burns, and injuries from shrapnel due to recent explosions.
I frequently visit this hospital and now, I'm familiar to the kids and their families. The very same individuals are clutching my hand or tugging at my clothes, begging me to lead them to safety. But where is safety?
"Regrettably, they're posing a question that only has one response: safety is nowhere guaranteed. This also applies to their situation in the hospital, as they are aware," he commented.
The health department in Gaza, overseen by Hamas, reports that the death toll has surpassed 500 since the reinitiation of the bombardment.
The ministry also reported that the conflict in the strip has resulted in over 15,500 fatalities since its onset.
Mohammed Ghalayini, a British-Palestinian residing in Gaza, described the conditions in the city as "extremely disastrous".
For over 50 days, individuals have been enduring harsh attacks from Israel and are now severely depleted of all basic necessities such as food, water, electricity, and sanitation services," he communicated to the BBC via telephone, until the call was abruptly disconnected.
The specialist in air pollution, who typically resides in Manchester, came to Gaza for a quarter-year stay to visit his mother, just prior to the assaults on October 7.
In response to Hamas's assaults on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and 240 abductions, Israel initiated its counteractive airstrikes on Gaza.
Since the conflict restarted on Friday, missiles have been consistently launched towards Israel from Gaza. A young man of 22 in the city of Holon, situated close to Tel Aviv, received medical attention for minor injuries caused by debris on Saturday.
Numerous individuals, in the hundreds of thousands, have already evacuated in response to the conflicts, seeking refuge in Khan Younis. This comes after Israel issued a directive for them to vacate the northern part of the strip.
The most recent report from the UN indicates that approximately 1.8 million individuals in Gaza are currently displaced within their own country
In an interview with the BBC, Filippo Grandi, the UN's head of human rights, stated that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are increasingly being cornered in an already constrained area.
The Israeli Defense Forces have started sharing online maps of the regions they plan to target. The IDF claims that these maps, in conjunction with other strategies such as phone alerts and pamphlets distributed over Gaza via aircraft, serve to alert inhabitants to vacate the area.
During an interview on the BBC's Sunday programme with Laura Kuenssberg, Mark Regev, a top aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stated that civilians are never intentionally targeted. He added that the task of ensuring their safety becomes harder due to Hamas placing its military operations within residential areas.
He asserts that the IDF is striving for utmost precision in a challenging combat environment and has provided prior notice of assaults.
Independently, the IDF reports that they have demolished 500 "terror tunnel" openings utilized by Hamas in Gaza, from the total of 800 they claim to have discovered to date.
The statement also mentioned that approximately 10,000 airstrikes against "terrorist targets" have been executed by the air force, guided by IDF soldiers on the ground, since the onset of the war.
