She established and currently leads Conservation Through Public Health, a non-profit organization that encourages biodiversity preservation. It achieves this by fostering co-existence between people, gorillas, and other wildlife, while also enhancing their health.

Following thirty years of on-site research, she has contributed to the growth of the mountain gorilla population from 300 to approximately 500. This improvement has led to a change in their conservation status from critically endangered to simply endangered.

This year, Dr Kalema-Zikusoka is featured in BBC's 100 Women list. Additional information about her, along with other women dedicated to assisting wildlife in adapting to climate change, can be found in this article.
