Where Is Vili Fualaau Now?

Date:

preview for May December - Official Trailer (Sky)

Todd Haynes’ new movie May December presents a fictitious interpretation of an infamous scandal, with Julianne Moore and Charles Melton playing a couple inspired by real-life sex offender Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, whom Letourneau began a relationship with when he was just 12 years old and eventually married after serving time in prison.

In the movie, Moore and Melton’s characters Gracie and Joe are still married and about to celebrate their twin children’s high school graduation, when actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) enters their lives, eager to do research before portraying Gracie in a film. Gracie and Joe start out eager to answer Elizabeth’s questions, hoping it will change public perception of their controversial relationship, but her presence actually ends up making Joe less certain of the role he played as child, despite Gracie’s insistence that he was the one who pursued her.

In real life, Letourneau did serve time in prison, had two children with Fualaau, married him, and had to live as a registered sex offender upon her release. However, unlike May December, Fualaau divorced Letourneau in 2019. Letourneau died from cancer the following year.

Where is Vili Fualaau now?

Following his divorce from Letourneau, Fualaau has kept his life very private. He pursued a career as a DJ in Seattle at one point, using the moniker “DJ Headline,” but he has no personal social media presence and has avoided further interaction with the media.

In 2021, Fualaau was arrested for driving under the influence after failing a sobriety test—this was not his first DUI, having previously appeared in court on similar charges in 2006. However, he was released from police custody the next day, and the DUI case was eventually dropped.

In 2022, two years after Letourneau’s death, he had a third child, a daughter, with a woman whose identity is not known.
