In a year packed to the brim with gourmand trends—Tomato Girl Summer and glazed donut makeup among them—it seems that the “latte dressing” phenomenon emerged victorious by virtue of staying power. And nobody seems to have demonstrated a fondness for neutrals this year more than Meghan Markle.
The Duchess of Sussex attended a number of events this year—from the red carpet to Prince Harry’s weeklong Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany—in coffee-colored outfits.
But just because Markle has a preferred color palette doesn’t mean she’s a snoozy dresser. In fact, some of her finest looks were purely monochromatic. Take, for instance, the gorgeous cream off-the-shoulder jumpsuit from Altruzarra—a masterclass in tailoring—that she wore to the Archwell Foundation’s Mental Health Summit this past October, or the preppy cable-knit Ralph Lauren sweater vest that she paired with cropped white jeans at the Invictus Games.
Markle also marked a return to the red carpet in 2023, generally staying in her wheelhouse. For Variety’s Power of Women event in Los Angeles, she wore a nude, asymmetrical Proenza Schouler dress. But at the Women of Vision Awards—at which she was an honoree—she stepped out of her comfort zone, rocking a strapless gold Johanna Ortiz dress complete with a keyhole cutout.
