Issa Rae’s makeup artist taught her an irresistible bronzer hack, and Jennifer Garner has found the key to full brows in her 50s. In Vogue’s edit of the best celebrity makeup moments of 2023, the actors share their beauty secrets alongside Julianne Moore, Eva Longoria, Ariana Grande, and many more famous faces. But first, they lay the foundation.
Amelia Gray’s Glossier pick has been her base of choice since she was 15—but she applies it using a trick she picked up more recently. “I’m gonna put a little bit in the palm of my hand,” she says. “I learned that from Hailey Bieber.” Kylie Jenner applies foundation with her hands too, calling it an “intimate experience.” Lala Anthony uses a sponge to help her Luminous Silk foundation “oxidize,” while Teyana Taylor mixes two Nars shades with a brush.
Concealer comes next, and Jihyo tames dark circles with Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage. Lola Tung loves Merit’s vegan concealer stick, while Alia Bhatt covers a persistent pimple with Nars’s creamy formulation.
When it’s time for color, “bronzer really helps with that glowy look,” Rae says. Using “the three method” that her makeup artist taught her, she draws the number onto the side of her face with Tower 28’s cream. Eva Longoria gets “snatched” using a sculpting powder from Makeup by Mario, and Alycia Debnam-Carey enhances her “slightly olive” skin with Benefit’s Hoola Lite bronzer.
Lexi Underwood declares herself a “blush girl” as she applies one from Nars, while Jihyo gets the faintest flush with a powder from Milk Touch. Grande uses a Dior blush on her eyebrows—“and kind of everywhere”—and Jennifer Garner also has a “liberal” touch with her Stila blush.
Arsema Thomas gets creative with her contour placement, putting a bit of Fenty’s Skinstick under her nose, and Grande—who uses a balm from Danessa Myricks—finds herself contouring her hairline “more and more as time goes on.” When it’s time to highlight, Ester Expósito pats some Fenty shimmer onto her lids, and Jenner is “obsessed” with the Nudestix All Over Face Color Glow.
Complexions intact, it’s time to raise some eyebrows—and Garner feels “embarrassed to be seen without” her Chanel pencil. “I used to have a lot of brows; I don’t so much anymore,” says the 51-year-old. Grande’s MAC pencil helps her achieve an “Audrey Hepburn–ish” brow, while Tung gives a “chef’s kiss” to the NYX Control Freak.
Moving onto eyeliner, Jenner’s “baby wing” is courtesy of the Kylie Cosmetics liquid pen, while Grande goes in for a “heavier” flick with Charlotte Tilbury’s Rock ‘N’ Kohl. To cap off the eyes, “this makes it look like I made an effort,” Rae says, applying About-Face’s Glitter Eye Paint.
While she’s not known for fussy riders, Longoria admits: “I ask a lot of my lip liners.” Victoria Beckham’s Lip Definer checks her boxes for creaminess and lasting wear. Roberts sticks with Charlotte Tilbury’s universally flattering Pillow Talk pencil, while Kathryn Newton’s crimson Chanel liner is worn down to a nub. “Can you tell I use it?” she quips. Speaking of Chanel, Phoebe Tonkin never leaves home without the brand’s red lipstick, which she applies to both lips and cheeks.
After lip gloss and setting spray, Carlacia Grant finishes her routine in a cloud of Kilian Can’t Stop Loving You. Rae sticks to Chanel’s classic No. 5, quipping, “I’m basic like that,” while Gray layers her Kayali scent with Xtra Milk Fragrance by Dedcool. After all, “what’s a good makeup look without smelling good?” Grant asks.
