Suits, the strangely addictive legal drama that made a star of Meghan Markle long before she became the Duchess of Sussex, has been experiencing something of a renaissance of late. Since landing on Netflix last June, the slick procedural has broken a string of records to become the most streamed show of 2023, and a recent cast reunion at the Golden Globes prompted even more speculation about a possible new revival. Now, it’s been confirmed that NBC has ordered a pilot for a spin-off series titled Suits: LA.
Set in Los Angeles (a commutable distance from Meghan and Harry’s Montecito home) and penned by the original show’s creator, Aaron Korsh, this companion series will reportedly play out in the same world as Suits, but will follow a new group of characters. Alongside Korsh, Suits: LA’s executive producers will include Dave Bartis, Doug Liman, and Gene Klein, all of whom were involved in the original show, while Victoria Mahoney will direct.
The log line states that the series “will centre on Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor in New York who has reinvented himself while representing powerful clients in Los Angeles. His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career. Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel; events which led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved.” Production is due to begin in March, though no casting announcements have been made yet.
Would any of the original stars return? When asked the question on the Golden Globes red carpet, Patrick J. Adams—who portrayed Mike Ross opposite Markle’s Rachel Zane—said: “If I got the phone call, I’m ready to suit up again. I love the show, I love the character, and I loved working with all these people.” And as for his onscreen partner? “Sure, Mike and Rachel [are] in Seattle… they’ve got to come down to LA and fix some stuff,” he speculated.
