Indie-pop artist and producer Devon Michael unveils her new single/lyric video, “Retrograde,” a track lifted from her forthcoming EP, Even NASA Loses Satellites, via Head Bitch Music in the U.S. and AWAL in the UK and Europe.
The song’s title – “Retrograde” – refers to the catchphrase “Mercury in retrograde,” often cited as the source of every ailment.
Devon explains, “I’m fascinated by metaphysics, so I wanted to know the science behind retrograde which refers to the times when Mercury appears to be moving backward when in reality it’s not – that’s just our perception of the planet based on the speed of its orbit. ‘Retrograde’ is a song about feeling like I’m falling behind / falling apart and then turning to the stars for some sort of a sign that the feeling is temporary – that I’m just in retrograde. It’s a reminder that our perceptions are often much more dramatic than our realities and that we’re constantly moving forward and growing.”
She adds, “Oh, and then there are ’80s synths, wild bass lines, and silly lyrics about rose quartz and Palo Santo because, don’t be fooled by this metaphor-laden explanation, this song is a bop,”
Raised in a musical family, Devon knew she was destined for a lifelong musical journey. At an early age, she was writing and self-producing her own music and by the time she was a teenager, she already had several cuts placed in TV shows on NBC, FOX, and ESPN.
Before moving to Los Angeles in 2020, Devon was a staple of the music scene in NYC, Philadelphia, and Boston, playing Bowery Electric, Mercury Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, Hard Rock Cafe and World Cafe Live opening for the likes of The Warning and Ripe while also wowing audiences at Boston Harbor Fest, Boston First Night, Angie’s List ‘Festival of Service,’ University of Central Missouri’s ONE Concert and WXPN’s Love Fest.
On March 8th, Devon Michael joined a lineup of 10 artists including Hannah Avison, Kalie Shorr, Averi Burk, Lavalove, and Gena B. Jones, to celebrate International Women’s Day at The Hotel Cafe. The annual event raised money for two important charities, The 100 Percenters and VoteRunLead, while fostering conversations about gender parity and inspiring inclusion.
“Retrograde” opens with Devon’s deliciously soft voice flowing into an upbeat pop melody riding an effervescence-inducing rhythm, pulsating with feel-good energy. On the chorus, Devon’s vocals elevate to bright, bubbly textures, imbuing the lyrics with vibrant, yummy tones.
“Give me a sign / That I’m just in retrograde.”
