The Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds Tour kicks off with a sold-out Houston show, the first of 18 performances across 16 North American cities through July.
Fans are traveling from far and wide to catch one of the world’s most legendary rock bands in what could be their last tour. The Rolling Stones — formed over six decades ago — played to a sold-out crowd at the NRG Stadium in Houston, starting off with their 1981 classic, “Start Me Up.”
Mick Jagger, now 80 years old, took to the stage in a striped jacket, a grey sequined shirt, and black jeans, dancing and skipping across the stage with all the prowess of his younger self.
“Hello, Houston! It’s good to be back in the lone star state,” Jagger greeted a roaring crowd, sharing anecdotes from the band’s trip to NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, and cracking wise about local Texas convenience stores.
Performing alongside Jagger were The Stones’ other surviving members, Keith Richards (also 80), and Ronnie Wood (76), as well as 67-year-old drummer Steve Jordan, who replaced original member Charlie Watts following his passing in 2021, shortly after turning 80.
The band played 18 songs over two hours, including a mix of classics and a couple from their latest record, Hackney Diamonds — their first album of original songs since 2005 — and the first since the death of drummer Charlie Watts. Other songs played included “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” and “Out of Time,” before closing with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”
“Every time I see them, it’s such a joy. They’re amazing; they take such true joy in playing,” said 56-year-old fan Greta Brasgalla from El Paso, who traveled to Houston to see the band live for the seventh time, and plans to see them again in Atlanta in June.
As the band members enter their eighth decade on this earth, many fans are understandably concerned that this may be their final chance to see the legendary rockers live. The Rolling Stones are heading to New Orleans Jazz Fest on Thursday, May 2, before heading west to hit Arizona, Nevada, and Washington.
