House of the Dragon Just Introduced a New Stark Ancestor

preview for House of the Dragon: season 2 - Official Trailer (Sky)

HBO’s BIGGEST SHOW of the year, House of the Dragon, is back for Season 2.

It may be overwhelming to jump back in due to the many, many shocking events of Season 1, especially since Season 2 jumps right in where the show left off. Our characters are at war. And everyone’s reeling from the death of Rhaenyra’s son, Lucerys, who died at the hands of Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar. If there was any chance to go back to a time of peace and harmony, it’s long gone.

The season 2 premiere does start in a surprising locale, however. Rather than the more temperate climate of King’s Landing, we start off at the colder, wintery home of the Starks. We see men about to be sent off to the Night’s Watch (even centuries before Game of Thrones, “winter is coming”). And there, Rhaenyra’s other son, Jacaerys, talks to a new face.

You likely remember that Ned Stark and his family were at the center of Game of Thrones, but have yet to make much of an influence in House of the Dragon. In the premiere of the newest season, we now get a glimpse of what the Starks are up to while the Targaryens have their internal fight. Dragons aside, both sides know they need men to fight a war, and have started to shore up their defenses. The more houses on their side, the more men they have, and the more influence too.

Here’s everything you should know about Cregan Stark.

Cregan Stark could be an influential part of House of the Dragon.

While the Starks may not have a family member near the throne, they still play an important role in the “Dance of the Dragons,” as the Targaryen civil war is called.

Cregan Stark, also known as the Wolf of the North, is the Lord of Winterfell and head of House Stark, a title he gained at the youthful age of 16. He’s the oldest son of Rickon Stark, and in the series, he’s played by Tom Taylor.

As in the show, Cregan notably sides with Rhaenyra and her family during the Dance of the Dragons. Rhaenyra’s eldest son, Jacaerys, visits Winterfell and manages to convince Cregan to send men for the cause.

Without giving away too much, this hopefully won’t be the last we see Cregan. In the books, he and Jace continue working together beyond Cregan promising his men to the cause. However, according to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, series co-creator Ryan Condol admits there’s going to be deviations from the books, and there’s no promises on whether or not Cregan will return as expected.

“We’ll see how that plays,” Condal says. “Anybody that reads the books knows that he does play a role in the larger Dance of the Dragons. I would love to have Tom back. We really enjoyed working with him, but I think we need to play the story out a bit and see where it takes us.”

We’ll have to keep an eye out for him as the season progresses.
