Inside The New—And Very Italian—Dolce & Gabbana Beauty Line

Date:

The aesthetic of the Dolce & Gabbana woman has long been documented: decadent dresses, a strong silhouette, baroque-style jewelry, a punchy red lip, radiant skin, perhaps a slash of liquid liner… You only have to look at the brand’s runway or Alta Moda shows to see how this vibe is reinforced season after season.

Now, the beauty line is getting fully up to speed, having been recently brought in-house. The move has created both a reinvigoration in the makeup’s packaging and formulations to fit the codes of the house Italian, as well as a new relationship with the London-based, Italian-Japanese makeup artist Naoko Scintu, who is known for her work on faces such as Emilia Clarke, Jodie Comer, Kaia Gerber, Greta Lee, and Emily Ratajkowski.

When it comes to makeup—and the complexion in particular—Scintu is well-known for a radiant finish to her artistry. Her self-described signature is “luminous skin, with pops or accents of pigmented color, and above all a strong character coming through,” she explains on the eve of the relaunch. “This is the same kind of vision as Dolce & Gabbana as well, a celebration of classic looks where people just want to look like the best versions of themselves. It’s all about beautifying and elevating the every day, which I think is really important.”

“The new Dolce & Gabbana makeup collection is chic, elegant, and wearable for all,” she expands. “It’s a collection that embodies Italian design and where each product contains Italian-sourced skin-loving ingredients and everything goes back to the roots of the house. It’s a collection of products that can be used to create beautiful finishes, with easy application, to create flawless looks”.

Below, see the five products that Scintu highlights as the heroes to get you started.

The Blueberry Nutri-Tint

“This product is me in a bottle and the finish is the way I want the skin to look: more glowy, more radiant, where you can see the skin underneath—this isn’t a mask. It comes in 30 shades and application wise, it’s a light to medium coverage. So if you want something a bit lighter, apply less product and then you can build it up [if you want to]. And because it’s such a seamless application, it just blends really easily with fingertips. On myself, I always use my fingertips.”

The Bergamot Glow Primer

“What I really love about the bergamot glow primer is it’s really quick and easy to use, and you don’t need a lot of product—you only need a small, pea-sized amount. If you use a bit of this, it gives you instant hydration, which, for me, is the key to any kind of makeup base, to have skin be hydrated. That way, anything that you put on top is really going to work so much better.”

The Face & Eyes Match

“This is your everyday essential, multi-tasking makeup product. It comes in a wide, refillable compact with a great mirror. But what I really love about this product is how it really mimics real skin. Even though it’s a powder, your skin looks like real skin straight away: you can use it on the eyes and over the cheekbones, wherever you want to be a bit more bronzed or sculpted. It blends really beautifully and doesn’t streak.”

The Eye Dare You Palette

“When I was younger, I liked to experiment more and be more daring with multi-colours on the eyes. I suppose the eighties were a great influence on me but just having fun was key. As I get older, I feel I like to stick to one shade on my eyes and keep the skin pared back, so I have one focus on the face (silver shimmer on the eyes, for example). But that’s why I love the ‘Eye Dare You’ palette, as you can create so many interesting looks or simple looks with the array of shades and textures this palette carries.”

The Mint Oil Lip Plumper

“This lip oil has a pH color reacting agent that gives natural hydration to lips, along with mirror-like shine. Ideal for creating a fresh finish, it has a glowy texture and refreshing sensation as soon as you apply it.”
