SOMETIMES, IT CAN take a minute for a great show to really catch on. Those of us who were even relatively early adapters to HBO’s Succession—easily one of the best shows of the last decade, and rightfully-lauded as such by just about everyone—remember the early days, when the show’s first season seemed sparsely-watched and like we needed to be vocal fans to do our part to make sure its brilliance would continue. Succession eventually earned a devoted audience (and lots and lots of awards), but not every show is so lucky.
Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, a darkly comedic spy comedy show based on a series of novels by British writer Mick Herron, earned tons of quiet acclaim during its first couple of seasons, but seems to have finally turned the corner after its third season, and is now riding that into a huge season 4. Season 3 broke through, not only growing its viewership and fanbase, but also garnering nine Emmy nominations (including Best Drama Series, Best Lead Actor for Gary Oldman, and Best Supporting Actor for Jack Lowden). If you’re looking for a show poised to absolutely take off, it’s Slow Horses.
And, luckily, Slow Horses is the best kind of good show. It’s digestible—each season is only six episodes long—and hardly complex; the seasons feature straightforward storylines that are easy to follow, but smart and don’t take treat the audience like a bunch of dummies. If you want to feel like you’re getting inside a season-long case of spycraft (under the watchful eye of Oldman’s vile leader Jackson Lamb), this is the show for you.
Perhaps most notable, though, is that Slow Horses is in rare company in this modern age of TV. Where many shows take years between seasons, the Apple TV+ series is in rare company—along with The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, and few select others—of shows that are reliably back year after year. The show debuted in April 2022, and is already airing its fourth season in September 2024. How’s that for efficiency?
Below, we’ve got all the information you need so you won’t miss a single important detail to come out of Slow Horses season 4. Or a single episode.
