A recent US federal corruption investigation has indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams. This indictment makes him the first sitting mayor to face charges while in office.
However, Adams disclosed his readiness to fight the charges with “every ounce of my strength and spirit.” He also noted that he won’t resign from his position amid the allegations.
Federal Corruption Investigation Indicts Pro-Crypto New York Mayor
According to a New York Times report, a federal corruption investigation indicted New York City’s pro-crypto Mayor, Eric Adams. The report cited sources familiar with the matter and noted that the Mayor’s indictment is still sealed, so the charges against him are unclear.
Per the report, the Mayor has several days to turn himself in. This move will keep him away from court on Thursday. Also, prosecutors revealed to Adams’ attorneys that he must surrender in court on a set date once he’s charged.
Mayor Adams was expected to appear in court on September 26. This court unveiled the indictment and the charges against him.
Meanwhile, Adams has released a statement regarding the indictment via a recorded tape at his official residence. The Mayor labeled the possible charges against him false and declared his decision to remain in office.
The pro-crypto Mayor stated: “I always knew that if I stood my ground for all of you, that I would be a target — and a target I became. I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and my spirit.”
Some senior congressmen, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have called for Adam’s resignation as the NYC major. However, the Mayor disclosed that he would not make such a move even if he faced charges.
Investigatory Trend On Mayor Adams And His Administration
The latest indictment on Adams came after previous investigations against him and some of his administrative members. Adams received a federal grand jury subpoena regarding an investigation over corruption and illegal campaign donations.
In November 2023, an FBI investigation led to agents raiding the home of Brianna Suggs, Adam’s chief fundraiser. Also, in 2021, some FBI agents searched Adams’ electronic devices following alleged illegal donations from the Turkish government.
Further, the probe explored whether the Mayor forced New York City Fire Department officials to compromise safety requirements. This revolved around the officials’ signing off on a new high-rise consulate building for Turkish government officials amid safety concerns about the structural design.
Also, federal investigators tried to uncover whether Adams had taken expensive flights on the Turkish government’s partially owned Turkish Airlines.
Regarding Mayor Eric Adam’s interaction with crypto, he has maintained a friendly stance on Bitcoin and other digital assets.
Following his resumption in office, the Mayor took his first three paychecks in BTC and ETH. In 2021, he promised to reposition New York as a focal point for the country’s crypto industry.
