Cate Blanchett and Alfonso Cuarón Make Disclaimer 7 Episodes of Must-See TV

Date:

THE LIMITED-EVENT SERIES has long been a major part of the television landscape. But ever since the 2014 release of the first season of True Detective, it’s proven to be something more: a way to get movie-level talent onto the small screen for what’s ultimately a short-term commitment. True Detective got Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (and, in later seasons, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and Jodie Foster). Mare of Easttown got Kate Winslet. Sharp Objects got Amy Adams. The Sympathizer got Robert Downey Jr. A bunch of shows got Nicole Kidman. And that’s just to name a few.

What’s been less common—albeit not entirely absent—has been the major, name film director helming the entirety of a television limited series. We haven’t seen a TV event helmed entirely by a Steven Spielberg or a Martin Scorsese, but we did get the 18-episode epic Twin Peaks: The Return, entirely helmed by David Lynch, back in 2024. Earlier this year, Park Chan-wook got behind the camera for the first three episodes and served as a co-showrunner for The Sympathizer. Both were a treat.

These two ideas come together for Apple TV+’s new limited series Disclaimer, which is entirely written and directed by four-time Academy Award-winner Alfonso Cuarón (who won a pair of Best Director Oscars for Gravity and Roma), and features a star-studded cast led by Cate Blanchett, a two-time Oscar-winner in her own right (who gave a performance in 2022’s Tár that was certainly deserving of making her a three-time winner).

Disclaimer: A Novel

Based on a novel of the same name by author Renée Knight, Disclaimer tells a story from multiple perspectives and with much mystery about a journalist named Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) who is anonymously sent an unpublished novel that appears to expose a series of misdeeds from her youth. Is she being blackmailed? The show is intercut with several other intriguing storylines, following the grieving teacher who appears to be behind the book (Kevin Kline) and a young traveling man (Louis Partridge) who seems to be intertwining with a younger Catherine.

Where does the story go from here? We leave that to the incredibly engaging way the story Cuarón allows things to unfold; as always, his camera work is incredible (with cinematography from three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki), and the images are sharp, vivacious, and full of color, while he gets fantastic performances out of his entire cast, which also includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and more.

Which is all to say: you’re going to want to get in on Disclaimer from the very start. Below, we have all the information available to ensure you don’t miss a single minute (let alone an episode).
