In a nutshell: Apple brought a customizable Touch Bar to MacBooks a few years back, but the feature was eventually abandoned following widespread criticism. Despite its discontinuation, the Touch Bar did have a loyal fanbase and now, some passionate fans have resurrected it as a standalone add-on compatible with various devices and programs.

A new Kickstarter campaign seeks to revive the versatile Touch Bar once featured on select MacBooks. Similar to the integrated solution, the USB attachment provides users with an easily accessible set of extra buttons and controls.

Apple had previously replaced the MacBook’s function key row with a thin touchscreen, offering media controls, a brightness slider, and other program-specific buttons. The Touch Bar was phased out in later models due to a lack of widespread enthusiasm, though some saw its potential, citing flaws in its execution. For instance, repositioning the bar could have made it more comfortable to use.

Enter the Flexbar, an external touchscreen that offers customizable functionality for any program. Unlike its predecessor, this new version is not limited to MacBooks; it supports laptops, desktops, and mobile devices running Windows, macOS, Android, iPadOS, and more, though Android and iPadOS users can only access hotkey functionality.

Customization is easy with FlexbarDesigner, currently in alpha for Windows and available through the project’s Kickstarter page. A helpful video guide is also provided. The Flexbar team has already created pre-configured layouts with shortcuts and hotkeys for popular programs like Adobe Premiere, Twitch, Minecraft, Microsoft Office, Google Chrome, and others. The device automatically adjusts its interface to match the active window.

Another standout feature is the Workspace function, which allows users to save and recall custom window arrangements with the press of a button. FlexbarDesigner also supports the recording of action sequences, including delays and loops, to automate repetitive tasks. Additionally, users can display PC performance metrics directly on the bar, freeing up space on the main display.

The 10.8-inch x 0.6-inch x 0.3-inch bar features a 2,170 x 60 AMOLED screen and provides haptic feedback for a more tactile experience. While the device is currently only available in silver, backers can suggest an additional color if the campaign reaches a $100,000 stretch goal. As of writing, the Kickstarter has raised over $72,000 with 28 days remaining, surpassing its minimum target.

A Q2 2025 launch is planned with an MSRP of $179, but early-bird offers are available for $119 while supplies last.
